I love having easy black basics in my wardrobe to throw on when I'm short on time or creativity. Both these pants and this shirt are years old and get so much wear. The top I'll wear tucked in or loose like this, the sleeves down in colder weather and rolled for spring and early fall. The pants you know I adore and wear with everything from sequins and stilettos to casual sweaters and sneakers.
But basic black pieces can look pretty drab if they're not accessorized. The addition of a current style of bag, necklace, and sunglasses help. Does does makeup, which is also an accessory. Adding a deep wine lip adds glam and a current trend to old faithfuls from the closet. A dark wine lip is very on trend this season. This is ‘Bette' from NARS' Audacious lipstick line and it has been a favorite all fall. Not too goth, not too red, not too shiny, not too matte. It feels good on the lips, lasts, and wears well through the day. To make it last longer and not feather or bleed, I use a clear lip liner like Dior's. It really makes a difference, especially with a high pigment lipstick like this one.
For the rest of the face I kept it simple since the lip is such a bold statement. For the eyes, on the lids all I have it MAC's Paint Pot in Camel Coat. I curled my lashed with the Kevyn Aucoin lash curler, two coats of DiorShow, and I did a fine line of brownish-black liquid liner right on the lash line to give the effect of thicker lashes without it being too strong of a look for daytime. To make this look holiday glam, switch the liner to one that is black, make a slightly thicker line, and replace the wine colored lip with a festive bright red (my favorite is Lancome's ‘L'Absolu Rouge Définition' in Le Carmin). Add a bit of highlighter to your cheekbones (I'm a fan of MAC's Strobe Cream) will make your skin look dewy and catch the light beautifully at an evening affair.

Sorry I have been MIA – I had work training Monday and Tuesday. It was great, but the trainer had a cough and the sniffles and he mentioned being sicker earlier… and I think I got what he had. I was sniffly and a bit icky Tuesday, woke up Tuesday night with a bad cough…
Yesterday… Y’all didn’t miss much. My tunic top from Language Los Angeles, my Essential jeans, tan sandals, silver jewelry, second-day hair. No pics. Here is today… warmer day than we have had in a bit so eeking out the last few times I can rock the summer sandals and dresses… Purple print jersey knot-front dress…
Didn’t take many photos at all. Sorry guys. Saturday started off with yoga class. I wore these new knit separates I got from C.enne.v Couture (review to come). Sillky-soft black jersey short-sleeved hoodie and cropped drawstring pants with a white ribbed tank from Old Navy underneath. Afterwards, we had a few friends over. The plan…
Work has been hectic, life outside has been hectic, and I haven’t been good about getting daily outfit posts up here. Here’s some peeks into what I have been wearing lately: I can’t recall what day this was… think it was the end of last week? It was an early morning and a very long…
I didn’t take any pictures yesterday. I wore my dark Long and Lean jeans from Gap, black city boots, a white tank and my orange sweater jacket from J. Crew. Today I dressed in a bit of a rush because I was having too much fun bonding with the family this morning. Emerson cut her…
Random question – what do you make of the adage that if you wore it the first time around you can’t wear it the second time? Chokers are BACK and I wore them to death in the 90s… too old to do it again?
I’m wearing chokers! I won’t be wearing any stretchy rubber gummy ones, and likely won’t be going full ’90s with a cameo or something hanging from it, but I say if you like it do it again. Rules are meant to be broken!
Hi Alison – ok, wacky question – for a nude lipliner, do you use it on the outer edges of your lips, or outside your lips entirely?? I have slight lip wrinkles that prohibit me from wearing dark red lipsticks, so I’m hoping something like this would help. Thank you!
Not a wacky question at all! I use it on the outer edges of my lips, staying on the actual lip itself. It helps fill in the the little wrinkles and acts as a barrier. You can also put over the whole lip to make lipstick last longer 🙂
Love your style.

Love the styling, including your lip color and nail polish. You know, I’m a huge fan of total black looks.

I love posts on how to re use what is already in my closet.
It makes sense to buy less and restyle what you have!

Do they still sell the Dior one? I saw a tester at Duty Free when I last went abroad but the guy said it had recently been discontinued!
Ignore me, just found it on their website!
Sweet!
