I love having easy black basics in my wardrobe to throw on when I'm short on time or creativity. Both these pants and this shirt are years old and get so much wear. The top I'll wear tucked in or loose like this, the sleeves down in colder weather and rolled for spring and early fall. The pants you know I adore and wear with everything from sequins and stilettos to casual sweaters and sneakers.
But basic black pieces can look pretty drab if they're not accessorized. The addition of a current style of bag, necklace, and sunglasses help. Does does makeup, which is also an accessory. Adding a deep wine lip adds glam and a current trend to old faithfuls from the closet. A dark wine lip is very on trend this season. This is ‘Bette' from NARS' Audacious lipstick line and it has been a favorite all fall. Not too goth, not too red, not too shiny, not too matte. It feels good on the lips, lasts, and wears well through the day. To make it last longer and not feather or bleed, I use a clear lip liner like Dior's. It really makes a difference, especially with a high pigment lipstick like this one.
Thank you Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. When you asked me to write about fall beauty trends it made me realize how much makeup I have that I have bought from Nordstrom. And right now's a great time to shop beauty at Nordstrom because they currently have over 80 different gifts with purchases taking place!

When Karl and I got married, our wedding color was orange (with hot pink accents). We had a signature cocktail at the wedding reception, an Orange Crush. Considering I’m wearing an orange cocktail dress in today’s blog post I felt Orange Crush was a fitting title. Orange is my favorite color, and I think it’s…
Black cashmere puffed-sleeve top from Banana Republic, gray ‘Drew” trousers from limited, black booties from Sudini, silver bracelet from Ann Taylor Loft, silver hoops. Hair is next day, big sections twirled around a curling iron and then a bit of Jonathan Silky Dirt twirled around the sections for hold, separation and shine. Makeup is Revlon…
I bought this dress back in August. At that time it didn’t fit – the arms were far too tight, it gaped at the waist and severely constricted my bust. I am glad to say it now comfortably fits. I may not be losing a ton on the scale, but I am seeing big changes…
I am working from home because I an not feeling so hot. Black yoga pants, black Bravado Body Silk nursing bra which looks a bit like a cropped tank. Peeking out of a hot pink scoop tee from Gap that is a bit too big. Desperate need of a shower, which I will do once…
Black merino shift from Banana Republic, black footless tights from Old Navy, tan Bern boots from Duo, green pashmina from Nordstrom, silver cuff and hoops. Hair was air dried sans product, then hit sections with the curling iron and then used a small amount of Jonathan Silky Dirt in hands and twirled around sections. Makeup…
Random question – what do you make of the adage that if you wore it the first time around you can’t wear it the second time? Chokers are BACK and I wore them to death in the 90s… too old to do it again?
I’m wearing chokers! I won’t be wearing any stretchy rubber gummy ones, and likely won’t be going full ’90s with a cameo or something hanging from it, but I say if you like it do it again. Rules are meant to be broken!
Hi Alison – ok, wacky question – for a nude lipliner, do you use it on the outer edges of your lips, or outside your lips entirely?? I have slight lip wrinkles that prohibit me from wearing dark red lipsticks, so I’m hoping something like this would help. Thank you!
Not a wacky question at all! I use it on the outer edges of my lips, staying on the actual lip itself. It helps fill in the the little wrinkles and acts as a barrier. You can also put over the whole lip to make lipstick last longer 🙂
Love your style.

Love the styling, including your lip color and nail polish. You know, I’m a huge fan of total black looks.

I love posts on how to re use what is already in my closet.
It makes sense to buy less and restyle what you have!

Do they still sell the Dior one? I saw a tester at Duty Free when I last went abroad but the guy said it had recently been discontinued!
Ignore me, just found it on their website!
Sweet!
