6 Top Summer Shoe Trends for Grown-ass Women: 2025 Edition
We grown-ass women wear whatever we want, but sometimes, we like to know what's fashionable each season so we can add some trends to our existing closet. The easiest way to update your existing summer wardrobe is by leaning into current summer shoe trends.
Each summer, new shoes are considered “hot,” but not all are comfortable or work with a grown woman's wardrobe. Some claim to be ideal for travel and walking but give us the worst blisters no matter how many times you try and “break them in.” Others, while they're great for walking, aren't always the most visually appealing (not that that's entirely important, but it does matter!). Below, I share on-trend summer shoes that are great for us grown-ass women. You don't have to compromise, you can get both style and comfort.
What 2025 Shoe Trends Are Still Stylish?
I wrote this post in 2023, updated it for Summer 2024 shoe trends, and am updating it again to keep up with the summer shoe trends of 2025. Updating outdated content makes more sense than making a whole new article. But for reference, here at the shoe trends for grown women I've recommend over the last couple of years.
In 2023, the summer shoe trends were:
- Square-toe kitten heel sandals
- Elevated flip flop
- “Dad” or fisherman sandal
- Birkenstocks (and similar sandals)
- Elevated ballet flat (focusing on square toes, metallics, and Mary Janes)
- Retro-inspired sneakers that were lower profile and trim
In 2024, the summer shoe trends were:
- Peeptoe kitten heels
- Dressy flip flops and thong sandals
- Sleek sneakers
- Western boots
- Elevated flats
- Natural fibers
Honestly, all of these trends remain stylish in 2025. Maybe some styles and trends didn't have as much longevity, but you'll find that many of these examples are still hot and will continue to work with 2025 fashion trends. But, if you do wish to updates your shoe game this season, I'm sharing the top 2025 summer show trends best for us grown-ass women.
Top Summer Shoe Trends for Grown Women
I am sticking to the six styles I think are more wearable and will give you the most bang for your buck if added to your existing wardrobe. Like my list last year, these will still be chic in 2026 (and beyond).
If you want an overview of what I said about last year's summer shoe trends, you can review that below. Otherwise, keep scrolling for 2025's new and improved list of summer shoe trends that will keep your feet (and your wardrobe) happy.
Kitten Heels
Last summer, I said kitten heel sandals were hot and while they continue to be, you will see kitten heel everything in 2024. For summer, along with kitten heel sandals, you will see plenty of kitten heel peeptoes. And come fall and winter, I am expecting to see plenty of kitten heel boots and pumps.
shop the collage: one (under $100)| two (with arch support) | three | four | five (under $60) | six | seven (under $90) | eight (4 widths under $100) | nine | ten (2 widths under $60) | eleven (under $60) | twelve
While kitten heels may bring to mind a very specific silhouette, in 2024, kitten heel means it's a heel that is not chunky and is not tall. That means you'll see some interesting architecture, some slimmer, some tapered, some sculptural, and a nice mix of modern and retro silhouettes. You will see kitten heel mules and slides, slingbacks and pumps, and sandals of every shape and style. It's nice to have a dressy shoe that isn't sky-high!
Dressy Flip Flops and Thong Sandals
I don't condone wearing flip flops and thongs every day as they can really strain your feet and rarely provide support. However, this year you will find thong sandals with ankle straps, toe rings, slingbacks, and lots of top of foot coverage so your toes don't have to work as hard.
shop the collage: one (under $20) | two | three (2 widths available) | four | five | six (under $100) | seven | eight | nine (under $90) | ten | eleven (under $50) | twelve | thirteen (2 widths available) | fourteen (2 widths available) | fifteen | sixteen (sustainable)
A pair of these flat thong sandals are a travel favorite of mine as they take up so little room in luggage. If you get them in a metallic or elevated style, they can be your dressy shoes or your hotel room slippers, and tuck into your day bag for a quick change when your feet need a break from your sightseeing shoes. They're also great to have for occasions taking place on sand and grass, looking chic with jumpsuits, dresses, and polished shorts that are hot this summer.
Sleek Sneakers
I discussed this trend last summer, but with movies like Challengers, all these sports-related documentaries, and the popularity of pickleball and tennis, the court sneaker or tennis shoe and other retro-inspired sleek sneakers are hot hot hot. What's great is these shoes are often lighter-weight fabrics, making them much more comfortable in summer than chunky leather sneakers (and cheaper too!).
shop the collage: one | two (2 widths available) | three (sustainable) | four | five (sustainable) | six | seven (I own these and find them wide-friendly) | eight | nine (2 widths available) | ten | eleven | twelve
White is classic, but you will see black, tan, and plenty of colors this season. Do what makes you happy and works best with your wardrobe. If you got the Birknstock Bend sneakers, those are still a great choice as is the Taos Plim Soul, the Naturalizer Morrison, and the Vionic Kimmie, which is in the collage above.
Western Boots
The country-western theme continues into 2024, and cowboy boots and other footwear inspired by cowboy and western boots are a popular look, along with shorts, dresses, skirts, and jeans. Go classic, or have fun as you will find styles from ankle booties to knee-grazing tall boots this summer.
shop the collage: one | two (2 widths) | three | four | five | six (under $60) | seven | eight | nine | ten (wide calf and width; code ALISON15 for 15% off)
As someone who lives in a place where summer is not only hot but humid, and I don't ride horses or do any summer activities that benefit from such footwear, I will be passing on this trend. But boots can look pretty sharp with sundresses and shorts and if you like a practical trend, buy quality and love these boots for many years to come.
Elevated Flats
Mary Jane straps and ankle straps. Pleated vamps. Bows and buckles. Statement-making soles. Square toes and elongated toes and open toes and cap toes. Grommets and mesh and metallics. 2024 continues the trend of the elevated flat.
shop the collage: one | two | three | four | five | six (2 widths available) | seven | eight | nine | ten (2 widths available) | eleven | twelve | thirteen
While in 2023 the focus was on more structured of flats, this summer rock those soft pliable ballet flats and glove flats. Again, there isn't a super specific must-have silhouette or color so wear what you like. Silver chrome flats continue to be stylish, and pops of red, orange, and green will work now and into fall.
Natural Fibers
Canvas, raffia, rope, rattan, macrame, wood, cork. This season you will see a lot of shoes incorporating more natural of fibers as well as those natural colors of cream, tan, and brown. Not just the textile, these natural fibers are used for accessorizing. you'll see raffia and rope bows, wood embellishment, and rattan inserts.
shop the collage: one | two | three (2 widths available) | four | five | six | seven | eight (4 widths available) | nine (2 widths available) | ten | eleven (4 widths available) | twelve
I love a cork or raffia shoe for summer because it goes with everything. Not as dressy as a metallic, a natural fiber shoe can go from wide-leg linen drawstring pants to a cocktail dress.
Top 2025 Summer Shoe Trends for Grown Women
Mules
I recently discussed mules in my “stylish closed-toe summer shoes” post, and it deserves a spot here as well. Mules are just one of those styles that as a society, we will never grow tired of. They're versatile, chic, and typically very comfortable. You can find woven styles, bright colors, heeled or non-heeledโit's hard not to find a style that you won't love and get plenty of use out of.
Clogs
I know what you may be thinking… “Clogs? In a summer shoe trends post? Really?” And I was just as surprised when researching. But we're not talking about classic closed-toe clogs with thick material to keep your toes warm in the fall and winter. We're looking at a revamped, summer-appropriate, no-sweating-necessary style.
Miu Miu has introduced their open-toe calf suede clog sandals, modernizing a closet staple into something new and fresh. Now, I don't know about you, but I won't be paying the $875 for a pair of summer shoes (more power to you if you choose to!). But, you can find almost identical styles at a much more budget-friendly price from brands such as Steve Madden, Shutz, and even Revolve.
Bold Versus Neutral Sneakers
There's a few fun things that have come from this year's summer shoe trends as far as the sneaker world goes. On one hand, the whites, neutrals, tans, and blacks will always have a permanent spot in trends. They're timeless go-to's that pair well with anything from athelisure looks to gauzy sundresses.
On the other hand, we're seeing another resurgence of the bright, retro-inspired sneaker. Anthropologie, for example, has been selling their gold-toned Gola Elan sneakers like hotcakes. And Adidas, while the Sambas have always been a popular choice, is sporting an ash blue variation that blends vintage charm with modern edge. They don't have to be your everyday shoe, but it's a nice switch-up on days you want to add a little color.
Metal Toe Cap Heels
We've had the kitten heels, we've worn the wedges, but the summer shoe trends of 2025 are introducing a new style to the mix: metallic toe-capped heels. I wasn't sure how to feel about them at first, but I think they're actually really fun.
The metallic details adds a modern edge to a classic silhouette, making them first for anything from casual outings to more sophisticated settings.
Fishermans
Coming in as a blast from 2023's past, Fishermans are ranking in again as one of the top summer shoe trends, and I'm not mad about it. They're similar to mules in the sense of versatilityโyou can opt for a heel if you want a little height or stick with the flats if you plan to be on your feet a lot.
These Aerosole ones are a personal favorite thanks to the wide width, but it won't be hard to find a style that suits your wardrobe (and comfort) the best.
Rope Sandals
We're used to flip flops, Birkenstocks, and regular throw-on-and-go sandals, and even rope-textured heels, but rope sandals are a new one this season. They're fantastic for adding a nice, laid-back look to your outfit, and you can find them in a wide variety of colors and styles.
Some are wedges, some are platforms, and some are just entirely flat. You can also find rope sandals that have textured straps and regular soles, or variations wrapped entirely in rope-detailing. Nonetheless, this style really gives an effortless, earthy vibe that pairs nicely with warm weather and relaxation.
What Summer Shoe Trends Are a Continuing Classic?
If you have espadrilles, huaraches, or delicately strappy heels, they are still on trend this summer. Such shoes won't be going out of fashion any time soon. In fact, many fashion magazines are claiming strappy-heeled sandals and wedge espadrilles to be hot trends for 2025.
What Color Shoes Are Stylish This Summer?
In the summer of 2023, the black sandal was a hot look. For the summer of 2024, white shoes were extremely popular. As far as summer shoes trends go for 2025, there are lots of browns and mochas making a stand. Fortunately, these shades are inherently neutral so they pair nicely with plenty of things. However, you don't need to buy brown shoes to look stylish this summer. I didn't participate in the white shoe trend of 2024, and I was perfectly content with all of the stylish outfits I curated.
I am seeing a return to neutrals, especially with textureโbut this has been a reoccurring theme for quite a few years now. Raffia, cork, linen, crochet, woven, and snakeskin are in, especially if they are looking natural in shades of tan, camel, beige, cream, and brown. You will see a lot of heels and soles made of cork, wood, and rope.
Color pops are still chic. While 2023 was all about pink, and 2024 was the year for green, 2025 is bringing in lots of oranges, yellows, and pastel blues. From cantaloupe and coral to lemon and daffodil, you will likely find footwear (and other accessories) prioritizing these summery hues. But continue to wear your colorful shoes of any shade as the primary rule with fashion right now is to put your own personal spin on it (and that includes favorite colors.)
But What About [Enter Summer Shoe Trend Here]?
This list doesn't encompass all the hot footwear trends for Summer 2025, just the ones I think are the most comfortable, versatile, and easy to add to an existing closet for us grown-ass women. These are new styles (or revisit of styles we've worn before) that will update your existing not-so little black dresses, linen and chino pieces, and breezy sundresses.
I have chosen to bypass trends that we likely did before, know they suck, and won't revisit. For example, jelly shoes. Yes, they are back, and no, I doubt any of us wish to revisit that slippery, stinky trend. Mesh flats are back, too. I remember having mesh indentations on my both cold and sweaty feet, which hurt from the lack of arch support and cushioning. But you do you, wear what brings you comfort and joy!
Heeled and wedge slides and mules are also back, whether they are a wide strap over most of the foot or more delicate structure holding the foot by a thong, toe ring, or a couple of thin straps. And we all likely did that platform slide from Steve Madden with the black fabric upper. I know my ankles have never been the same since I did such slides and I can't in good conscience recommend one to revisit that style.
But I Need [Enter Foot Problem Solver Here]
I never believe in sacrificing comfort and health for fashion. My advice is a guide, not gospel. If you need a certain style of shoe to deal with your foot issues, then rock those shoes without shame. In fact, you may find this year, with the trend towards more substantial sandals and the added variety of “cool” sneakers, that you have more luck than in past years in finding shoes that fit your personal style aesthetic and your comfort and health needs!
I just looked at your website and found it very interesting and helpful. I’m looking forward to reading many of your posts
Your words were like a refreshing breeze on a hot day, bringing clarity and inspiration when I needed it most
Your writings stick out to me since the content is interesting and simple to understand. Even though I’ve read a lot of websites, I still like yours more. Your essay was interesting to read. I can understand the essay better now that I’ve read it carefully. In the future, I’d like to read more of your writing.
I have the J Crew low profile sneakers that you showed above & really like them. They are so cute & look good with jeans, pants, & crop pants too. They were also comfortable right out of the box, as in no rubbing or blisters from the first time I wore them. Shocked me because Iโve rarely had that happen with any shoes. They are not the best for miles & miles of walking, but theyโre fairly comfortable, for me, for quite a bit of walking. I wore them on & off recently when in Los Angeles on a day where I had a mix of walking but also riding on the metro and/or Ubers. I also recently got a pair of the Taos white leather sneakers and they are definitely good for heavy walking. They did require some breaking in for me though & left me with quite a few blisters on just 1 foot after I started wearing them. That did get better for the most part.
i definitely have a foot issue that landed me in the hospital in 2021. Infection in both heels that got into the bone. 3 surgeries on my poor heels. My feet have healed (it’s hard to avoid a pun here) but I still need footwear that protects and covers my heels. It looks like Fisherman’s sandals could be just what I need for summer. And I like the clunky, heavy look.
What shoe is in your top picture (the title slide)? It looks like a couple featured in the Dad Sandal section, but none seem to match exactly. It’s just the style and color I’m looking for.
Thanks!
The top picture is stock photography, unfortunately I do not know when it was taken or more details on that shoe.
Love this post! Always looking for shoe advice from you – from my Ally pumps to my new Birkenstock sneakers youโve never steered me wrong.
Headed to Europe for a big touristy vacation this summer for the first time since Covid and would love to see a shoe post about comfortable shoes to wear as a tourist – shoes I can wear all day hiking around cobblestone streets but still look nice in!
If I were going on such a trip, I’d take my Birkenstock Bend sneakers and likely a pair of Teva sandals, the ones with the more molded sole like the Hurricanes. Both have done me well for walking a lot on uneven terrain.
Birk Mayari’s are super comfortable, too. I have ugly bunions and have trouble finding shoes that fit, but these work well and look cute.
Thank you for this recommendation!
I love this! Shoes are my jam! Now that my life has changed and my feet are older (and wiser??) I stick to styles that have at least some arch support and aren’t too narrow.
I love a classic fisherman/gladiator style sandal. I had a brown pair I bought from Eddie Bauer years ago that had just the right lift and good support. They looked great with everything – pants, dresses, shorts, etc. I wore those until they literally fell apart and regretted not buying another pair while I had the chance. I am always looking for one that could replace what those were for me.
I am also a huge fan of Birks and Dansko sandals. I was just trying on shoes yesterday and was very tempted by the #9 (Dansko Kandi) in the Birks collage. They have good arch support, the straps are adjustable and they add a little height but are lightweight. They are a nice sandal for summer! I may have bought them yesterday but they had only blue in my size. I was hoping for the pink or maybe black.
And omigosh! I love the retro sneakers! Tretorns! I dearly want a pair but most I have tried in past seasons have either been too narrow and/or very little arch support. If I can find a pair I like that are wide enough I may need to break down and just get some good insoles to wear with them.
Love this!
Great round-up, thanks! I love ballet flats and the square-toed version currently considered stylish fits me perfectly. Of all the ones I’ve tried, I like the Sam Edelman versions the best: May, Marisol, and Meadow. I recommend going a half size smaller than your usual size, and they should be snug at first wear because, being leather, they will stretch.
Which shoe is shown in your header image (the first slide)? A few pairs in the Dad Sandal area appear similar, but nothing quite clicks. It’s the perfect shade and design for me.
I am so sorry but that is stock photography and not a sandal I found online.
